Music & Me

Hello. My name is Simone. I'm a bit of an older student. I came to Converse to study Biochemistry. In hopes to go into the research on how diet and genetics have a hand in cancer and diabetes because i have a family history with both. Before I came here, I was a truck driver, I was a class A CDL holder and have driven through most of the lower forty-eight states. Before that I was a licensed auto and property insurance agent that was licensed in forty-nine of fifty states. I had been wanting to come back to school for a while before I actually did but felt like there were things that I needed to do beforehand.

A lot of my musical taste is roughly in the same category with a few exceptions. Below are a some examples of the majority of my music taste. Some of the exceptions would be Avril Lavigne, Katie Perry, Adam Lambert, Billie Eilish, Halestorm and Kesha

1. Examples that I like right now:
There are three examples of music that I like right now. The first one is Letdown. (the period is a part of the name.) The second one is Fit for Rivals, and the third one is Black Veil Brides. These bands are the ones I shuffle through the most when on Spotify. Most of the reasoning behind that is the voice of the singer. It's really hard to describe the reason behind why I like their voices so much. Five Finger Death Punch can also fall into this category.  Another reason I like them right now is because they help me focus on my schoolwork or help to keep me awake while I'm driving if I feel tired.

2. Music that means something to me:

One band that has come to mean a lot to me is Tokio Hotel. This is the band that helped me find a new language to learn, they are also a big reason as to why I'm a German Studies Minor. How did they help me find a new language to learn? I was in high school, it was summertime and I just happened to stumble upon them online. At first I tried learning Spanish but it never really clicked. I think the first song of theirs that I listened to was “Durch den Monsun" English version being “Monsoon" and I recognized a lot of the words before I even heard the English version.  I was so intrigued by the language that I just had to learn it. Even after high school. Black Veil Brides could also go into this category. Especially the music video I placed in the previous section. I use to have some of the lyrics from that song tattooed on me.

3. Music that I don't really connect with:

There are only three types of music that I don't really connect with. At least I think it’s three types because I don’t know if one of them should be split into two categories. Those categories would be rap/hip hop, country, and classical. Growing up my mother would listen to country music. Well, when she could. What I had heard of it wasn’t all that good. During my middle and high school days, almost all of the students listened to rap/ hip hop. And a lot of the time they would play it so loud that everyone in the room could hear it. It didn’t make, and still doesn’t make sense to me. I don’t know if it was just the lyrics themselves or the beat of the music that I didn’t like, or because of both. I really couldn’t tell. The last type of music would be classical. I wasn’t exposed to it as a young child, if fact I think I was only exposed to it because of school. I find it utterly boring. I know that there have been studies that showed that listening to classical music is supposed to help with focus like being able to study, and something else that I don’t know at the moment, but it will put me to sleep. I can’t focus on anything if that music is playing, I just want to leave the area. Although that is true with the other types of music in this category as well.

  1. Hi Simone! That’s so cool how you got into learning and studying German. I also can’t connect with rap/hiphop music, and I find a lot of the popular rap songs to have weird lyrics that give me the ick. I don’t like general country music either but I do like country-pop female artists like Carrie Underwood, Kacey Musgraves, and Maren Morris!

  2. Hi, Simone! I'm also an older student returning to school after a bit of a detour. While I don't personally connect with them, I enjoyed listening to your musical examples! I absolutely relate to enjoying a band or artist because of the quality of their voice or something in the instrumentation of the band. Thanks for sharing your music with us!
