One Last Culture Post

Image
For this blog I chose to go with traditional Norse music simply because I think that this culture is fascinating. I’m also trying to read some of the mythology that goes with this culture as lately I’ve just been pulled to it. In this blog I’m going to be going over some of the history, and the instruments used. In my research into this topic, I have found it would also mention another culture that I wrote about earlier in the semester. Both are well tied together. I am no longer able to find the article which stated this, which makes me sad, because I don’t even remember what I typed into Google to find it in the first place. Some of the instruments used in traditional Norse music are the Hardingfele, the Seljefløyte and the Kantele. The Hardingfele is the national instrument of Norway. It’s one of the few instruments that I found in my research that originated in Norway and not in another Scandinavian country. I never would have thought that a nation would have a national instrument...

The Roots of Emo Rock

Image
Today’s blog is about the roots of emo rock. I’m going to go over some history on the genre, such as how it got started, which genres fed into it and some of the early bands of the genre. I’m also going to cover what instruments are used as well as the vocal style and typical lyrics of this genre. I want to also go over my experience with this genre and why I chose to do a blog on it.                Emo is short for emotional hardcore or emocore. Emo rock music is a subgenre of punk rock that was created in the mid-1980’s in Washington DC. Though that was only the first wave. The second came from America’s Midwest. Though some say that it was California then in the Midwest, and I the Midwest is where it changed. Throughout the 90’s it spread across the country. As the new millennium came in emo rock had come away from its roots, mixing with alt-rock ...

Music & Gender

Image
I honestly hadn’t thought about gender expectations in music before. I don’t know if I see expectations in gender in music, but I do see gender norms. Maybe those are the same things, I’m not completely certain. Like I don’t see many females in rock music. And I don’t really see a lot of males in pop music, at least now a days.                 I think in dealing with sound equipment, it is mostly males. But I’ve never seen sound equipment or even the instruments being set up before so I really couldn’t say one way or the other. I couldn’t say one way or the other in regard to conducting because I don’t go to the orchestra of any kind. Teaching in general seems to be a more female dominated area while managing seems to be more male dominated. I don’t think that most men have the patience to teach.           ...

Music & Rituals.

I’ve chosen to write this blog on the Sami people. They are the indigenous people of norther Noray, Sweden, Finland and the far north of Russia. I first learned about them from a content creator on TikTok  Ida Helene Benonise n , who is Sami. This  website  also goes over the information.  I will mostly be talking about the Sami of Norway as that is the group, I can find the most information on.                 The article linked above does go into some information about the past between the Norwegian government and the people of Sami. To sum up the rest of the article there was the “School Law” that basically was the same for them as it was for the indigenous of North America. Though I’m not sure if the Sami were taken out of their homes and away from their families.                   Very fe...

Music & Me

Hello. My name is Simone. I'm a bit of an older student. I came to Converse to study Biochemistry. In hopes to go into the research on how diet and genetics have a hand in cancer and diabetes because i have a family history with both. Before I came here, I was a truck driver, I was a class A CDL holder and have driven through most of the lower forty-eight states. Before that I was a licensed auto and property insurance agent that was licensed in forty-nine of fifty states. I had been wanting to come back to school for a while before I actually did but felt like there were things that I needed to do beforehand. A lot of my musical taste is roughly in the same category with a few exceptions. Below are a some examples of the majority of my music taste. Some of the exceptions would be Avril Lavigne, Katie Perry, Adam Lambert, Billie Eilish, Halestorm and Kesha 1. Examples that I like right now:           There are three examples of music tha...
